PDPO Unveils the 2024 Data Privacy Campaign

Kampala, Uganda –
9th January, 2024

In a bid to promote public awareness about personal data protection and privacy, the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO) has today flagged off the 2024 Data Privacy campaign under the theme; “Stop, Think, Own Your Privacy”. This campaign is part of the drive towards commemoration of the international data privacy day that is celebrated annually on 28th January.
While launching the campaign at the Uganda Media Center, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi noted that in Uganda just like in other parts of the world, data privacy is a fundamental right and a cornerstone upon which digital freedoms are built. He emphasized that while we must acknowledge and embrace the transformative power of technology, we must also remain cognizant of its potential to infringe upon our privacy.

He applauded the team at the Personal Data Protection Office for the efforts undertaken towards execution of their mandate and the UN Global pulse lab for the support rendered to the office.

He further highlighted the ICT Ministry’s commitment to fostering an environment where technological innovation flourishes, but not at the expense of citizens' personal data. “Striking this balance is not just a responsibility—it is our duty as Government”, He added.

In his remarks, Mr. Alex Kibandama, the Board chairman of the National Information Technology Authority – Uganda noted that the Privacy Campaign is a collective call to action and a realization of a shared responsibility to protect the fundamental right to privacy as well as an opportunity to bridge the gap between legal frameworks and public awareness to position Uganda at the forefront of data protection and privacy.

Notably, he called upon Government, Private Sector, Development Partners, the Media, Civil Society, Academia, and Citizens to join hands in promoting responsible data privacy practices and learn from one another through engaging in meaningful conversations about the challenges and opportunities surrounding privacy, sharing experiences and best practices so as to collectively contribute to the creation of a data ecosystem characterized by trust, transparency, and respect.

In her address, Ms. Stella Alibateese, the National Personal Data Protection Director unpacked the 2024 Data Privacy Campaign as one that will focus on amplifying public awareness and understanding of the data protection and privacy principles, rights and responsibilities as enshrined in the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019. She encouraged the general public to embrace the campaign by participating in the different activities that include Webinars, Twitter/X Spaces, Guest Lectures at Universities, TV and Radio Talk Shows, and the Data Privacy Day Conference that will be held on 31st January, 2024. “Let us promote data protection and privacy awareness in Uganda and empower ourselves to not only understand but also exercise our respective data privacy rights and obligations”, she added.

The 2024 Data Privacy campaign comes at a crucial time when digital interactions and data sharing continue to form an integral part of everyday life. The Office calls upon everyone to join and actively participate in this campaign by spreading awareness, educating peers, and reinforcing data privacy principles.
