PDPO spearheads compliance in the NGO sphere
As we continue to ensure compliance with
the Data Protection and Privacy Act in the NGO sector, we participated in the
NGO’s Annual Legal and Regulatory Compliance Symposium 2023 organised by TASLAF Advocates to empower Non-Governmental
Organisations (NGOs) on how they can comply with the Data Protection and Privacy
Act.
While speaking on a panel, Stella Alibateese, National Personal Data Protection Director emphasized that the Office’s key expectation from Non-Governmental
Organisations is to register in compliance with the Data Protection and privacy
Act.
Beyond registration, she encouraged NGOs
to train Data Protection Officers & staff, develop internal privacy
policies and privacy notices, do data mapping and make use of the information
resources provided by the Office among others.
Stella also appealed to NGOs to always reach out
to the Office in case they have any requests for legal guidance.

She also noted that the office is open to
collaborations with civil society and is currently working with Unwanted Witness and Defenders Protection Initiative who have been critical in creating awareness
and ensuring compliance with the Data Protection and Privacy Act.
The symposium was organized by Taslaf Advocates, a specialist law firm providing tax and legal services to allow NGOs engage and exchange knowledge about the legal and regulatory framework concerning NGOs while enhancing local capacity for compliance and empowerment.
